The Šelmberk castle ruins are located on a rocky outcrop near the town of Mladá Vožice and are best known for their distinctive round bergfrit tower. It was likely founded in the early 14th century by the Lords of Šelmberk, an influential Bohemian noble family. For centuries, the castle served as the administrative center of the estate and was expanded in the Renaissance style during the 16th century before it gradually lost its significance. Since the 17th century, the complex has been in ruins. Today, the 26-meter-high lookout tower is the best-preserved feature, offering a wide view over the South Bohemian countryside. In recent years, the area has been developed into a center for experimental archaeology and historical crafts, hosting regular demonstrations of medieval lifestyle. The combination of historical ruins and living history makes Šelmberk a unique cultural destination.

Šelmberk Castle ruins are freely accessible anytime. The preserved keep serves as an observation tower and can be climbed for a small fee. The site is uncovered, so wear weatherproof clothing.

The outer grounds are accessible 24/7. The keep is typically open April-October on weekends and holidays from 10 AM to 5 PM. Off-season by appointment only.

Visiting the ruins with tower climb takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour. If exploring the surroundings, allow 1.5 hours.

By car, Šelmberk is reached from Mladá Vožice; parking near the ruins. Buses run from Mladá Vožice to Šelmberk stop, then 10 minutes walk.
