Vĩnh Long is a strategically important city located in the heart of the Mekong Delta, serving as the administrative capital of Vĩnh Long Province. Situated on the banks of the Cổ Chiên River, a major distributary of the Mekong, the city acts as a central hub for the distribution of the region's vast agricultural output. Its geography is defined by fertile alluvial plains, making Vĩnh Long a premier center for fruit cultivation, particularly famous for its pomelos, longans, and rambutans. Historically, the settlement was known as Long Hồ and played a significant role in the territorial defense of southern Vietnam during the Nguyễn Dynasty. A major cultural attraction is the Văn Thánh Miếu Temple, one of the few surviving Confucian temples in the south, built in the mid-19th century. The city is also the primary departure point for trips to An Bình Island, renowned for its traditional stilt houses and lush orchards. With the completion of the Mỹ Thuận Bridge, Vĩnh Long has become a crucial transit node linking Ho Chi Minh City with the deep south.
