Pleiku
Pleiku, the capital of Gia Lai province, provides a refreshing change from the tropical heat. Its most famous landmark is T'Nung Lake, an extinct volcanic crater often referred to as the 'Eye of Pleiku'. The city serves as a well-suited base for exploring the untouched nature of the Central Highlands and the traditional villages of the Jarai and Bahnar people. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, waterfalls like Phu Cuong, and endless coffee and tea plantations. Culturally, the massive 'Nhà Rông' communal houses are impressive sights. Foodies should not miss 'Phở khô' (dry Phở), a unique local variation of Vietnam's famous noodle soup served in two separate bowls. Getting to Pleiku is easiest via its domestic airport or by bus from Da Nang. The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to April, especially in December when the wildflowers bloom and the coffee harvest begins.
