An Khê is a historically and archaeologically significant town in Gia Lai Province, located at the strategic An Khê Pass in Vietnam's Central Highlands. The town gained international scientific acclaim following the discovery of Paleolithic hand axes, proving that the region was inhabited by early human ancestors approximately 800,000 years ago. Historically, An Khê was also the birthplace of the Tây Sơn Rebellion in the late 18th century, as the three brothers Nguyễn Nhạc, Nguyễn Huệ, and Nguyễn Lữ established their initial base of operations here. Geographically, the town sits in the transitional zone between the coastal plains of Bình Định and the Gia Lai plateau, granting it a vital role as a trade and transportation link. Today, the local economy is driven by agriculture, particularly the cultivation of sugarcane and cassava, alongside food processing industries. Key landmarks include the memorial sites dedicated to the Tây Sơn brothers and the An Khê Reservoir, which ensures the local water supply. The town maintains a serene atmosphere and takes great pride in its heritage as a convergence point for national history and prehistoric archaeology.
