National Pantheon (Venezuela)

Weather…

The National Pantheon of Venezuela is the final resting place of the country's most illustrious national heroes, located in the northern part of Caracas. Originally commissioned in 1874 by President Antonio Guzmán Blanco, it was built on the site of the former San Mauricio Church, which had been destroyed by an earthquake. The most prominent feature of the interior is the tomb of Simón Bolívar, the Liberator, whose remains were solemnly moved here in 1876. The central nave is dedicated to his memory, featuring high ceilings and majestic murals painted by the artist Tito Salas. These paintings depict key moments in Venezuelan history and the life of Bolívar himself. Besides the Liberator, the Pantheon houses the remains of more than 140 figures, including military leaders, scientists, and writers. Its neoclassical architecture and the constant presence of a military guard of honor emphasize its status as a sacred site of Venezuelan patriotism and history.
