Canons' Palace (Vatican)

Weather…

The Palazzo della Canonica is a significant building located to the south of St. Peter's Basilica, serving as the residence for the canons of the Basilica. The palace was constructed between 1776 and 1784 during the pontificate of Pope Pius VI, based on the designs of architect Carlo Marchionni. The architecture of the building is characterized by an elegant neoclassical style that harmoniously integrates into the monumental ensemble around St. Peter's Square. In addition to the residential quarters for the clergy, the complex houses administrative offices and chapter rooms that are central to the liturgical organization of the Basilica. The palace's location provides the canons with direct access to the sacristy and the main nave of the church. Historically, this structure replaced older medieval buildings to meet the increased administrative needs of the Vatican in the 18th century. Today, the Palazzo della Canonica continues to play an essential role in the daily life and religious administration of the Catholic Church's most important sanctuary.
