Palace of the Sacristy (Vatican)

Weather…

The Palazzo della Sacrestia is an architectural masterpiece of Neoclassicism, closely linked to St. Peter's Basilica. Constructed under Pope Pius VI between 1776 and 1784, the building was designed by architect Carlo Marchionni to house the liturgical treasures and administrative management of the Basilica. The palace is directly connected to St. Peter's via two monumental corridors and forms an essential part of the southern flank of the church. The interior is particularly impressive, featuring valuable marble works, statues, and splendid halls such as the Sagrestia Comune. This is where the vestments and sacred vessels needed for solemn masses in the Basilica are stored. The construction replaced an older, dilapidated sacristy and was part of the major 18th-century modernization efforts in the Vatican. Marchionni's architecture was praised at the time for its elegance and its ability not to overshadow the Basilica despite its size. Today, the palace also houses the Treasury Museum of St. Peter, offering visitors rare insights into the wealth of ecclesiastical art.
