Raphael Rooms (Vatican)

Weather…

The Raphael Rooms, or Stanze di Raffaello, constitute one of the most significant fresco cycles of the High Renaissance, located within the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. Commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1508, the project was intended to redecorate the official papal apartments as the Pope refused to occupy the rooms previously used by Alexander VI. Raphael and his workshop labored on the four suites of rooms until 1524, with much of the work in the final room completed by assistants after Raphael’s death in 1520. The sequence includes the Stanza della Segnatura, housing the iconic 'School of Athens', which represents the harmony between classical philosophy and theology. The Stanza di Eliodoro focuses on the miraculous protection of the Church, while the Stanza dell'Incendio del Borgo reflects on the historical achievements of past popes. The largest hall, the Room of Constantine, depicts the victory of Christianity over paganism. Today, these rooms remain a pinnacle of Western art, showcasing the evolution of Raphael’s style and the intellectual depth of the papal court during the 16th century.
