Palace of Sixtus V (Vatican)

Weather…

The Palazzo di Sisto V, often referred to as the Apostolic Palace in a strict sense, is the part of the Vatican complex that houses the papal apartments. This wing was constructed between 1589 and 1590 under Pope Sixtus V, following the plans of architect Domenico Fontana. The monumental building dominates the eastern side of the Cortile di San Damaso and is known for its clear, austere facade design typical of the late Renaissance. The palace houses not only the Pope's private rooms but also important State Secretariat offices and audience halls. The third floor is particularly famous, as it contains the windows from which the Pope traditionally recites the Angelus prayer. The interiors are decorated with precious frescoes and artworks reflecting the power and cultural status of the Holy See. Although Pope Francis chose to reside in the Santa Marta guesthouse, the palace remains the official seat of the Pontiff for official receptions and ceremonies. Fontana's architecture set standards for European palace construction and continues to define the official image of Vatican City today.
