Forari Mine Ruins (Vanuatu)

Weather…

The Forari Mine Ruins are located on the east coast of Efate Island and serve as an impressive witness to Vanuatu's 20th-century industrial history. The mine was opened in 1962 by the 'Compagnie Française des Phosphates de l'Océanie' (CFPO) to extract the region's rich manganese deposits. During its heyday, the mine employed hundreds of workers and featured its own settlement, workshops, and a loading facility for exporting the ore, primarily to Japan. Mining significantly shaped the local economy until operations ceased in 1978 due to falling global market prices and the depletion of profitable deposits. Today, the abandoned buildings, rusted processing plants, and infrastructure returning to the jungle are a destination for history-minded visitors. The remains offer a glimpse into the era of French industrial influence just before the country's independence. Despite its decay, Forari remains an important site for the local community, preserving the history of economic boom and the sudden end of the mining era.
