Getting there
The Efate Plateau is accessible from the capital city, Port Vila, via roads leading into the island's interior. A 4WD vehicle is often necessary for the final sections and for reaching the various cave entrances.
Best season
A visit is possible year-round, but the dry season (May to October) significantly eases trekking and cave exploration. During the rainy season, cave systems can be extremely slippery or even flooded.

The plateau is an extensive limestone terrace with typical karst relief, characterized by numerous caves and fissures. The surface is often uneven and covered by dense tropical vegetation between rocks.
What to bring
Be sure to bring a reliable flashlight or headlamp for the caves, as well as sturdy hiking shoes. Insect repellent and lightweight, breathable clothing are advisable due to the high humidity in the area.
Parking
Parking spaces can be found at the trailheads or near villages in the island's interior. It is recommended not to leave valuables visible in your vehicle while you are away exploring the plateau area.
Safety
Caution is advised on the often sharp-edged limestone rocks and in unlit parts of the caves. To avoid accidents, it is highly recommended to enter the caves only when accompanied by a local guide.
Time needed
A visit to the plateau and some of its caves typically lasts between 4 and 8 hours. Those who wish to gain a deeper insight into the karst landscape should plan to spend a full day in the area.
