Teouma River (Vanuatu)

Weather…

The Teouma River on Efate island represents one of the most significant archaeological sites in the entire Pacific region. In 2003, the largest and oldest known cemetery of the Lapita culture was discovered here, dating back over 3,000 years and providing definitive evidence regarding the migration patterns into Oceania. Geographically, the river flows through a deep valley in southern Efate before discharging into Teouma Bay. The surrounding floodplains are exceptionally fertile due to alluvial deposits and are intensively farmed by local residents. Historically, the Teouma Valley served as a vital settlement hub for various indigenous tribes prior to European colonization. Today, the river is not only a site of immeasurable scientific value but also remains a critical resource for local agriculture, particularly for the production of vegetables and root crops.
