Olmaliq lies about 65 kilometres south-east of Tashkent at the foot of the Kuramin Mountains and is the heart of Uzbekistan's non-ferrous metals industry. The city was founded in 1951 as a miners' settlement after huge copper, zinc, and molybdenum deposits were discovered in the area. Today around 145,000 people live here. The Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Combine (AMMC) is one of the country's largest employers, producing roughly 100,000 tonnes of copper a year, along with significant volumes of gold and silver. Decades of heavy industry have left visible scars: soil and air quality have been affected, prompting major modernisation and environmental programmes since the 2010s. Even so, Olmaliq remains an economically attractive place to live for many families, with solid infrastructure.
