The Rincón de Franquía Protected Area is located at the confluence of the Uruguay River and the Cuareim River, where the borders of Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina meet. This area, near the city of Bella Unión in the Artigas department, is a mosaic of diverse ecosystems, including native forests, wetlands, grasslands, and river islands. It was incorporated into the National System of Protected Areas (SNAP) due to its exceptional biodiversity. The area is particularly renowned for its rich avifauna, hosting over 300 species of birds, making it a prime destination for birdwatchers. Many of these species are at the southern limit of their distribution, highlighting the area's ecological importance.
