The Desniansko-Starohutskyi National Nature Park was established in 1999 and is located in the far north of Ukraine, in the Sumy region. It stretches along the left bank of the Desna River and directly borders the Russian state territory. The landscape is defined by pristine floodplain forests, extensive peat bogs, and the typical marshy terrains of the Polissya region. The park serves as a sanctuary for numerous rare animal species, including elk, lynx, and European bison. Best season
The Desna River and floodplain forests are most lively in spring (March-May) as migratory birds arrive and first flowers bloom. Autumn (September-October) features excellent conditions for observing deer and moose during the rut.
Best time of day
Early morning sees highest activity among forest dwellers like deer and wild boar, especially at forest edges and clearings. Just before dusk, nocturnal animals like beavers and otters emerge from hiding.
Etiquette
Stay on marked hiking trails to avoid damaging the forest floor and rare plants. Dogs must be kept on a leash throughout the park to avoid disturbing or endangering wildlife.
What to bring
Sturdy footwear and long clothing are recommended due to ticks and thorns in the floodplain forests. Binoculars and a camera with telephoto lens help observe shy animals from a distance.
Getting there
The park is in northern Ukraine, Chernihiv Oblast; the main entrance is near the village of Starohutka. Best accessed by car from Novhorod-Siverskyi; public transport is infrequent.
