💡 Tips
- Explore the remnants of the unfinished Crimean Nuclear Power Plant for a surreal, post-apocalyptic photography experience, but be extremely careful where you step.
- The beaches around Cape Kazantip offer excellent wind for kitesurfing and windsurfing during late summer.
- Bring enough cash, as ATMs can be unreliable and some small vendors only accept local currency.
- Public transport in the area is limited, so renting a car or hiring a local taxi is recommended for exploring nearby coves.
🍽 Food
Look for simple coastal cafes serving freshly caught Black Sea gobies (bychki) or mullet, usually fried crisp.
Find local bakeries or street stalls selling Chebureki (deep-fried meat turnovers) which are excellent for a beach snack.
During summer, buy sweet local watermelons and cantaloupes from roadside farmers' markets.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Small kiosks near the main beaches sell handmade shell crafts and local seaside trinkets.
Visit the town's central bazaar early in the morning for the best selection of local honey, herbs, and fresh produce.
Hike along the rugged cliffs of the reserve to spot diverse birdlife and enjoy pristine, quiet coves away from the town.
Walk through the planted pine forests on the outskirts of the town, offering shade and a distinct aroma mingling with the sea breeze.

Shcholkine is a town on the Kerch Peninsula in Crimea, on the coast of the Sea of Azov. Similar to Teplodar, it was founded in 1978 to house workers of the unfinished Crimean Nuclear Power Plant. After the project was abandoned, the town transformed into a modest seaside resort, known for its long sandy beaches and shallow, warm waters. It gained international fame as the original location for the renowned 'KaZantip Republic' electronic music festival from 1995 to 1999. The abandoned structures of the nuclear power plant, including the massive reactor building, provide a surreal backdrop and attract urban explorers. Getting there is typically via Kerch or Simferopol. Summer is the peak season for beachgoers.
