Popasna is a city in the Luhansk Oblast of eastern Ukraine, primarily known as a vital railway junction and industrial center. The settlement was founded in 1878 during the construction of the railway network that linked the various industrial hubs of the Donbas region. The city's growth was deeply connected to rail transport and the repair of railway carriages, making Popasna an essential logistical link in the heavy industry chain. In addition to its rail-based economy, the city hosted food processing plants and light manufacturing units that served the local population. Due to its strategic position on elevated terrain, Popasna has been a contested territory since 2014, often situated directly on the demarcation line. During the full-scale invasion in 2022, the city was almost entirely leveled after months of intense street fighting and heavy artillery bombardment. The destruction of Popasna serves as one of the most extreme examples of the erasure of entire urban centers in modern conflict. Today, the city largely exists only in the memories of its displaced residents.
