The city's history dates back to 1595 when it was established as a prominent Cossack settlement. One of the most famous historical figures associated with Merefa is the legendary Cossack leader Ivan Sirko, who is believed to have been born here or at least had very strong ties to the community. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Merefa evolved into an important industrial site, known primarily for its glass production and its function as a major railway junction. The city also hosts a significant research institute for sericulture (silk farming), highlighting its importance to the region's scientific community.
