Chersonesus (Ukraine)

Weather…

Chersonesus was founded in 422 BC by Greek settlers from Heraclea Pontica on the southwestern coast of the Crimean Peninsula. The ancient colony evolved into a major commercial hub and later served as a vital strategic outpost for the Byzantine Empire in the Black Sea region. The archaeological site features remarkably preserved remains, including a Greek theater, Roman defensive walls, and early Christian basilicas. It holds immense historical significance as the traditional site where Prince Vladimir the Great of Kyiv was baptized in 988 AD, an event that initiated the Christianization of Kievan Rus'. Despite surviving numerous sieges by nomadic tribes over centuries, the city was eventually destroyed by the Golden Horde in 1399. Today, Chersonesus is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, representing a unique synthesis of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine urban planning and culture.
