Mangup-Kale (Ukraine)

Weather…

Mangup-Kale is one of the most spectacular cave cities in Crimea, serving as the medieval capital of the Christian Principality of Theodoro. The fortress is situated on the Baba-Dag plateau, approximately 580 meters above sea level, protected by vertical cliffs on three sides. Its history dates back to the 6th century when the Byzantines established a fortress named Doros. During the 14th and 15th centuries, Mangup flourished as a center of Gothic-Byzantine culture until it fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1475 following a grueling six-month siege. The ruins include a powerful citadel, remains of churches, residential quarters, and over 80 cave complexes carved into the rock for defensive and storage purposes. Of particular interest is the Palace of the Princes of Theodoro, the foundations of which remain visible today. Mangup-Kale is both a vital archaeological site and a place of immense natural beauty, showcasing the diverse cultural history of the Crimean peninsula.
