Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve (Uganda)

Weather…

Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, in northeastern Uganda, is the country's second-largest protected area, covering an impressive 2,788 square kilometers. It is renowned for its vast, pristine savanna landscapes interspersed with acacia woodlands and rocky outcrops. The reserve is a crucial part of the greater Karamoja wilderness ecosystem. Historically, it was home to large herds of wildlife, but instability and poaching led to a drastic decline. In recent years, increased conservation efforts have led to a gradual recovery. Today, Pian Upe is a sanctuary for species like the Uganda kob, waterbuck, and a growing population of cheetahs, which are rare in Uganda. It is also the only area in Uganda where ostriches exist in the wild. With over 242 bird species and an increasing number of mammals, the reserve is being recognized as an emerging, off-the-beaten-path wildlife tourism destination.

Best time of day
Cool morning and evening hours are best for spotting both predators and prey on the savanna. At midday most animals rest in the shade of acacia trees and are seldom active.
📜
Etiquette
Always remain inside your vehicle when viewing predators and do not get out to approach them. Feeding animals is prohibited, and all waste must be carried out of the reserve.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars with at least 8x magnification are essential for scanning the vast savanna. A camera with a telephoto lens, plenty of water, and sun protection are highly recommended.
