Cotton Growing Areas (Uganda)

Weather…

Cotton, once dubbed Uganda's 'white gold', has been a major cash crop since the colonial era. The main growing areas are traditionally located in the northern and eastern parts of the country, particularly in the West Nile, Lango, and Teso sub-regions, where the climate and soils are suitable for cultivation. Cotton production is predominantly carried out by smallholder farmers, for whom it is an important source of income. The sector has experienced significant fluctuations over the years, affected by political instability and volatile world market prices. At its peak in the early 1970s, Uganda was a major cotton producer, but production declined dramatically in the subsequent decades. In recent times, there have been efforts to revive the sector, focusing on improving yields, quality, and value addition through local processing. Cotton ginneries, where the seeds are separated from the lint, are key infrastructure features in the growing areas, testament to cotton's long history in Uganda's economy.
