Maiden's Tower (Turkey)

Weather…

The Maiden's Tower, known as Kız Kulesi in Turkish, is an iconic structure located on a small islet in the Bosphorus Strait, about 200 meters off the coast of Üsküdar. The site's history dates back to the 5th century BC when the Athenian general Alcibiades built a custom station there to control ship traffic. Over the centuries, the tower has served various roles including a fortification, a lighthouse, a quarantine station, and a radio tower. The current architecture largely reflects 18th and 19th-century reconstructions following damage from earthquakes and fires. The tower is steeped in local folklore, most notably the legend of a king who sequestered his daughter there to protect her from a prophesied snakebite. Following an extensive restoration project, the tower reopened in 2023 as a monument and observation point, remaining one of Istanbul's most photographed landmarks.
