Galata Tower (Turkey)

Weather…

The Galata Tower is one of Istanbul's most striking landmarks, dominating the skyline on the northern shore of the Golden Horn in the Beyoğlu district. The current tower was built in 1348 by the Genoese colony in Constantinople as the 'Tower of Christ' and formed part of the Galata fortifications. Standing approximately 67 meters tall, it was the city's tallest building upon completion and has served various purposes over the centuries, including a dungeon, an observatory, and a fire watchtower. A famous legend states that in the 17th century, Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi flew from the tower across the Bosphorus to Üsküdar using artificial wings. During the Ottoman era, the tower was damaged multiple times by fires and storms, leading to several reconstructions reflecting different period styles. Its characteristic conical roof was restored during a major renovation in the 1960s. Today, the tower houses a museum and has a spectacular 360-degree view of the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn, and Istanbul's historic peninsula from its observation deck.
