Hagia Sophia (Turkey)

Weather…

Hagia Sophia in Istanbul is one of the world's greatest architectural masterpieces and a profound symbol of the city's diverse history. Consecrated in 537 AD under Emperor Justinian I as a Christian cathedral, it served as the largest church in Christendom for nearly a millennium. Following the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, Sultan Mehmed II converted the structure into a mosque, adding minarets and covering the Christian mosaics with plaster. In 1935, by decree of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Hagia Sophia was transformed into a museum, only to be re-designated as a mosque in 2020. The building is most famous for its massive central dome, an engineering marvel of late antiquity measuring over 31 meters in diameter. Its interior uniquely harmonizes Byzantine gold mosaics with monumental Islamic calligraphy discs, reflecting centuries of spiritual and cultural shifts.
