Belgrad Forest (Turkey)

Weather…

Belgrad Forest is a large mixed deciduous woodland located approximately 15 kilometers northwest of central Istanbul on the Thracian Peninsula. Spanning over 5,500 hectares, the forest has historically served as the primary source of drinking water for the city, featuring several Ottoman-era dams and stone aqueducts dating back to the 16th century. It is named after the thousands of Serbs relocated here from Belgrade in 1521 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent to manage the critical water infrastructure. The flora consists predominantly of sessile oak, beech, and chestnut trees, supporting a diverse range of wildlife including wild boars, foxes, and numerous bird species. Today, the forest is divided into nine nature parks and is protected to ensure the preservation of its biodiversity and its role as Istanbul's 'green lungs.' It remains a vital area for scientific research, particularly in forestry and hydrology, while providing essential recreational space.
