Gülhane Park is one of the oldest and largest public urban parks in Istanbul, situated in the historic Eminönü district adjacent to Topkapı Palace. Originally, the grounds served as the outer gardens of the imperial palace, accessible only to the Sultan and his court. The park gained immense historical significance in 1839 as the site where the Edict of Gülhane was proclaimed, launching the Tanzimat reforms and the modernization of the Ottoman Empire. It was officially opened to the general public in 1912 and even housed a zoo for a period. Today, the park is a serene green retreat in the heart of the bustling Old City, famous for its magnificent tulip displays during the Istanbul Tulip Festival in April. It features long walking paths shaded by ancient plane trees and contains the Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam.

Getting there
Gülhane Park is exceptionally easy to reach, located right in the historical Eminönü district of Istanbul, adjacent to Topkapı Palace. The most convenient access is via the T1 Tram line, stopping directly at the Gülhane station just steps from the main entrance.

The park is very secure, well-lit, and constantly patrolled by park guards, making it a safe retreat even during twilight hours. The main hazard is simply the intense crowds during the April Tulip Festival, where staying aware of your belongings is practical advice.
Time needed
A leisurely stroll down the main paths and a break by the fountains usually takes about one to two hours of your time. Many families and locals spend a full half-day relaxing under the trees, drinking tea at the cafes facing the Bosphorus, or reading.
