Grand Bazaar (Turkey)

Weather…

The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) in Istanbul is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, forming the lively heart of the city's historic center. Shortly after the conquest of Constantinople in 1455, Sultan Mehmed II ordered the construction of the initial sections to promote long-distance trade. Today, the bazaar encompasses over 60 streets and more than 4000 shops, spreading across an area of roughly 30,000 square meters. The labyrinth of vaulted alleyways is organized by trade, with gold, jewelry, carpets, leather goods, and spices being the primary commodities. Annually, between 90 and 100 million people visit the market, making it one of the most visited tourist attractions globally. Despite numerous fires and earthquakes over the centuries, the bazaar has been repeatedly restored and expanded in the Ottoman style. Beyond its retail spaces, the complex houses mosques, fountains, hammams, and coffee houses that maintain living traditions. The Grand Bazaar is not merely a place of commerce but a significant cultural monument symbolizing the bridge between East and West.
