The Ghannouch Chemical Complex, located north of Gabes, is the center of the Tunisian fertilizer industry. The facility is operated by the Groupe Chimique Tunisien (GCT) and processes raw phosphate from the Gafsa mines into high-value export products such as phosphoric acid, diammonium phosphate (DAP), and triple superphosphate (TSP). Since its establishment in the 1970s, the complex has made Tunisia a key player in the global agricultural market. The factories utilize complex chemical processes, including the burning of sulfur to produce sulfuric acid, which is required for phosphate digestion. Due to its massive industrial capacity, the site is closely linked to the Port of Gabes, where finished products are shipped. However, Ghannouch is also the subject of intense debate regarding pollution, as the disposal of phosphogypsum into the Gulf of Gabes has heavily impacted the marine ecosystem.
