Miskar Offshore Gas Field (Tunisia)

Weather…

The Miskar offshore gas field is situated approximately 125 kilometers off the coast of Tunisia in the Gulf of Gabes and stands as one of the country's most vital energy assets. Development of the field commenced in the 1990s by the British Gas Group, with full commercial production beginning in 1996. Natural gas is extracted from geological formations at depths exceeding 3,000 meters below the seabed, while the water depth at the platform location is around 60 meters. For several decades, Miskar supplied up to 60% of Tunisia's total domestic gas requirements, directly fueling the nation's power generation infrastructure. The site consists of a massive offshore production platform and a 120-kilometer subsea pipeline that transports raw gas to the Hannibal processing plant near Sfax. Despite natural production declines associated with mature fields, Miskar remains a cornerstone of the Tunisian energy sector and national security.

📋 Practical info

🏭
What is this place?
This major offshore facility in the Gulf of Gabes is critically important for Tunisia's energy supply, providing a large portion of the natural gas needed for domestic power plants.
🚪
Visiting
As a purely technical offshore platform out in the open sea, visiting is impossible; the structure is accessible only to specially trained personnel with appropriate marine transport.
👀
Where to view it
Because the platform is located far out in the Gulf of Gabes, it usually cannot be seen from the coast; one only notices the infrastructural connections and pipelines on the mainland.
🧺
Local products
In the coastal city of Gabes, travelers can visit the traditional spice market, taste fresh dates from the nearby oasis, and purchase authentic Tunisian handicrafts and souvenirs.
📆
Active season
Gas extraction runs around the clock all year round, but for tourists wanting to explore the surrounding coastal region, the mild spring and autumn months are generally the most suitable.
Nearby
A stay in the region is frequently combined with an extensive exploration of the maritime oasis of Gabes or a trip down south to the impressive and historic cave dwellings of Matmata.
