El Ghriba Synagogue (Tunisia)

Weather…

El Ghriba Synagogue on Djerba is the oldest continuously active synagogue in Africa, traditionally dating to the 6th century BC. The current building, rebuilt in the 19th century, features a distinctive blue-and-white color scheme. The interior includes a courtyard with arcades and a sanctuary with a raised bimah. The synagogue houses a silver Torah crown from the 18th century. The annual pilgrimage (Hillula) attracts up to 5,000 Jews and Muslims, reflecting shared traditions. The site is also venerated by Muslims, who believe a female Jewish saint rests here. In 2023, a terrorist attack killed five visitors, but the synagogue remained operational. The Ghriba community's unbroken presence on Djerba is unique in the Arab world. The synagogue's architecture blends North African and Sephardic elements.
