Lake Tonga
Lake Tonga is one of the most vital ecological sites in northeastern Algeria, situated entirely within the boundaries of the El Kala National Park. Covering an area of roughly 2,700 hectares, this seasonal freshwater lake fluctuates in size depending on the rainfall. It is classified as a Ramsar site of international importance due to its dense aquatic vegetation, including expansive beds of water lilies and reeds that cover much of the water's surface. The lake is a premier destination for ornithologists and wildlife enthusiasts. It serves as a crucial nesting and stopover site for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds traveling between Europe and Africa. Species frequently spotted here include the white-headed duck, purple heron, and various types of ibises. Wooden observation hides have been constructed around the lake's perimeter, allowing visitors to observe the wildlife without causing disturbance. Located just south of the coastal road RN44, the lake is easily accessible by car from the nearby city of El Kala. There are no commercial food facilities directly on the lake shores, maintaining its pristine natural environment. Late winter and early spring are the most rewarding times to visit Lake Tonga, as the water levels are at their highest and the bird migration is at its peak.
