Medina of Tunis (Tunisia)

Weather…

The Medina of Tunis is the historic core of the Tunisian capital and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. Spanning approximately 270 hectares, it contains over 700 monuments, including magnificent palaces, mosques, mausoleums, and madrasas. The Medina reached its peak of prosperity between the 12th and 16th centuries under Almohad and Hafsid rule, when Tunis emerged as one of the leading cities in the Islamic world. At its heart lies the Ez-Zitouna Mosque, founded in the 8th century, which also served as one of the earliest universities in the region. The labyrinthine alleys are organized into souks specialized by trade, where traditional goods such as perfumes, textiles, and leatherwork are still sold today. The architecture is characterized by whitewashed walls, horseshoe arches, and elaborately decorated blue wooden doors. Despite modern urban expansion, the Medina has preserved its authentic medieval character and remains the cultural and spiritual center of the city.
