Al-Zaytuna Mosque (Tunisia)

Weather…

The Al-Zaytuna Mosque, also known as the Mosque of the Olive, is the oldest mosque in the capital of Tunisia and serves as the architectural heart of the Tunis Medina. Established around 732 AD, its construction utilized hundreds of ancient columns repurposed from the ruins of Carthage, blending Roman aesthetics with early Islamic design. For centuries, it was not only a center of worship but also home to one of the world's first and greatest Islamic universities, influencing education across North Africa. The mosque complex covers an area of roughly 5,000 square meters, featuring a magnificent marble courtyard and a 15-bay prayer hall supported by a forest of arches. Its prominent 43-meter-high minaret was added in the 19th century, designed in the Almohad style to replace an earlier structure. According to legend, the mosque was named after a single olive tree that grew on the site where the founder, Hassan ibn al-Nu'man, began the construction. Today, as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it remains a pillar of Tunisian religious life and a masterpiece of medieval North African architecture, symbolizing the long-standing intellectual heritage of the city.
