Sangkhom
Sangkhom is a quiet retreat in Nong Khai Province, situated directly on the banks of the mighty Mekong River. The town is first-rate for travelers looking to experience the authentic rural life of Northeastern Thailand (Isan). The main attraction is Wat Pha Tak Suea temple, perched on a hill and featuring a glass-floored skywalk. From here, you have an unparalleled panoramic view of the Mekong, which forms the natural border with Laos. In the early morning, the landscape often transforms into a white sea of clouds, especially at the Phu Huai Isan viewpoint. Visitors can take local 'E-Tok' tractors up the hills to witness the striking sunrise. The region is also known for its banana plantations and relaxed riverside lifestyle, with small guesthouses offering stays right by the water. Several small waterfalls can also be explored in the nearby jungle. The best time to visit is from November to February, when the mist is most frequent and the weather is mild. Sangkhom is about 90 kilometers from Nong Khai and is best reached by motorbike or car along the scenic Mekong river road. It is a good stop for cyclists and backpackers seeking natural beauty and tranquility.
