Muang Xay, also known as Oudomxay, is the capital of the province of the same name in northern Laos and the most important transport hub in the region. The town stands at the junction of several national roads linking Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Phongsaly, Luang Namtha and the Chinese border at Boten. Its role has grown further with the recently opened China-Laos railway, whose station lies just outside town. Muang Xay has a visibly Chinese imprint of hotels, markets and construction investments, while at the same time being home to a very mixed ethnic population in which Khmu, Hmong and Phou Thai are particularly prominent. Highlights include the hilltop Phou That stupa and the surrounding terraced rice fields.
