Kizimkazi Historical Mosque (Tanzania)

Weather…

The Kizimkazi Mosque, located in the village of Dimbani at the southern tip of Zanzibar, is considered one of the oldest Islamic structures on the East African coast. A Kufic inscription on the mihrab (prayer niche) dates the mosque's founding to 1107 AD (500 AH), making it one of the earliest pieces of evidence for the presence of Islam in the region. Although much of the current structure dates from an 18th-century reconstruction, parts of the original foundation and the intricate mihrab have been preserved. The architecture is characterized by the use of coral stone and finely carved coral bosses. The mosque is not only a religious site but also a significant historical monument documenting the early trade relations between the Persian Gulf and the Swahili coast. Surrounded by ancient tombs and massive baobab trees, the site maintains a peaceful atmosphere and remains an active place of worship for the local community.
