Kigoma is a strategic port city located on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania and serves as the administrative capital of the Kigoma Region. The city is the western terminus of the Central Line railway, completed in 1914, which connects the interior of Africa to the port of Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean. Due to its proximity to the borders of Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kigoma functions as a vital commercial and transportation hub for the Great Lakes region. Just south of the city lies the historical settlement of Ujiji, where Henry Morton Stanley famously met David Livingstone in 1871. Kigoma is also the primary gateway for researchers and tourists visiting Gombe Stream National Park, where Jane Goodall initiated her pioneering chimpanzee studies in 1960. The local economy is driven by Lake Tanganyika's fishing industry, palm oil production, and the significant transit trade handled by its bustling harbor.
