Zanzibar City is the capital and largest city of the semi-autonomous Zanzibar archipelago, situated off the mainland coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. The city's historic core, known as Stone Town, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000 for its exceptional fusion of African, Arab, Indian, and European cultural influences. Throughout the 19th century, it served as a primary hub for the trade of spices, ivory, and slaves under the Omani Sultanate. Key architectural landmarks include the House of Wonders, constructed in 1883, the Old Fort dating from the late 17th century, and the Sultan's Palace Museum. While Stone Town retains its ancient narrow alleys and carved wooden doors, the newer district of Ng'ambo represents the city's modern expansion and administrative development. Today, the local economy thrives on international tourism, the export of cloves, and its strategic importance as a maritime port for East Africa.
