Mtoni Palace Ruins (Tanzania)

Weather…

Mtoni Palace is the oldest palace in Zanzibar, located north of Stone Town directly on the coastline. It was built around 1828 for Sultan Said bin Sultan shortly after he moved his primary residence from Muscat to Zanzibar. The name 'Mtoni' means 'place by the river' in Swahili, referring to its proximity to a freshwater source. The palace was a massive complex featuring internal courtyards, grand reception halls, and an extensive Persian-style bathhouse. It is famous as the birthplace of Princess Salme (Emily Ruete), who provided detailed accounts of court life in her memoirs. During its peak, over 1,000 people are estimated to have lived within the palace walls. Following the Sultan's death in 1856, the building fell into disrepair and was eventually partially dismantled. Today, the standing walls, arches, and remnants of the bathhouses testify to its former grandeur and serve as a vital record of the early Omani era on the island.
