Roman Theatre of Mérida (Spain)

Weather…

The Roman Theatre of Mérida stands as one of the most spectacular architectural legacies of the colony of Emerita Augusta, the former capital of the Roman province of Lusitania. The monument was erected between 16 and 15 BC by order of the consul Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa and originally accommodated six thousand spectators on its semicircular seating tiers built directly into the San Albín hill. The absolute masterpiece of the structure is the reconstructed Scaenae frons, a magnificent scenic backdrop consisting of two stacked tiers of Corinthian marble columns, interspersed with fine sculptures of Roman gods and emperors. Following the fall of the Roman Empire, the theater was abandoned due to Christian religious objections to theatrical performances and was eventually buried under tons of earth, leaving only the uppermost seating blocks, known as the Seven Chairs, visible for centuries. Since its excavation and careful restoration at the beginning of the 20th century, the theater has returned to its original purpose, hosting the prestigious International Classical Theatre Festival every summer.
