💡 Tips
- Visit the Roman amphitheater in the late afternoon when the golden hour sunlight beautifully illuminates the ancient stones.
- Local traffic can be chaotic; always negotiate and agree on taxi fares before getting into the vehicle.
- Dress conservatively out of respect for local customs, especially when walking away from the main coastal areas.
- Carry enough cash with you as card payments are rarely accepted and ATMs may not always be readily available or reliable.
🍽 Food
Look for small, unassuming family-run fish restaurants right along the harbor for the freshest catch of the day.
Try authentic Syrian shawarma from the busy street food vendors scattered around the city center.
Visit a traditional patisserie in the old bazaar district for fresh baklava and the cheese-based dessert Halawet el Jibn.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Wander through the narrow alleys of the old market to discover local spices, quality olive oil, and traditional crafts.
Keep an eye out for small workshops selling traditionally crafted, ornate coffee pots and serving trays.
A walk along the seafront promenade early in the morning has a peaceful atmosphere and a fresh, cool sea breeze.
The ancient ruins are often uncrowded, providing a quiet, contemplative place to sit and soak in the history.

Jableh is a coastal town in the Lattakia governorate, about 25 kilometers south of the provincial capital. Its history reaches back to the Phoenician and ancient Greek period, when the settlement of Gabala was one of the ports of the northern Syrian coast. From Roman times the well-preserved theater in the center of the town survives, with a capacity of about seven thousand spectators, and is one of the largest ancient monuments of Syria. During the Middle Ages Jableh was contested several times, yet it still preserves holy sites including the tomb of the Sufi master Ibrahim ibn Adham. The local economy is based on fishing, agriculture, especially citrus and tobacco, and increasingly on tourism along the nearby beaches and in the hinterland. The international airport just outside town, today partly serving civilian traffic, has significantly improved the city's connectivity.
