Lattakia is the most important port city of Syria, on the Mediterranean coast, squeezed between the Jebel Ansariya mountains to the east and the sea to the west. The city traces its origin back to the Seleucid foundation of Laodikeia ad Mare in the third century BCE, whose imprint is still visible in the harbor, in the orthogonal grid of the old town and in surviving columned monuments. In the Middle Ages it was contested by Byzantines, Crusaders, Ayyubids and Mamluks, and today it is Syria's leading container gateway, a major university center and the base of the country's northern coastal tourism. The city has also given its name to Latakia tobacco, sun-dried and then smoked over pine and oak, which is internationally prized in pipe blends. Beaches, the nearby mountain resort of Slunfeh and the wooded ranges of the hinterland make Lattakia the country's de facto summer capital.
