Saladin's Castle (Syria)

Weather…

Saladin's Castle, also known as Qal'at Salah al-Din, is one of the most visually impressive medieval fortresses in the Middle East, perched on a high ridge between two deep ravines near Lattakia. Originally a Byzantine stronghold, it was significantly expanded by the Crusaders in the early 12th century, who utilized its natural defenses to create an nearly impregnable bastion. The most remarkable engineering feat of the castle is the massive moat, 28 meters deep, painstakingly carved by hand into solid rock to isolate the fortress from the adjacent mountain slope. A singular rock needle remains in the center of the ditch, which once served as the support for a drawbridge. In 1188, the legendary Sultan Saladin captured the fortress after a brief siege, and it was subsequently named in his honor. The site features a mix of Byzantine layouts, Frankish masonry, and Ayyubid additions. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2006, it serves as a powerful testament to the military architecture of the Crusades.
