Al-Shouh and Al-Arz Nature Reserve (Syria)

Weather…

The Al-Shouh and Al-Arz Nature Reserve is located in the mountains of Lattakia in northwestern Syria and is known for its rare stands of Cilician fir (Abies cilicica) and Lebanon cedar (Cedrus libani). It extends over the slopes of the Al-Ansariyah Mountains at an altitude between 1,000 and 1,560 meters. Established in 1996, the reserve protects one of the last remaining primary forests of this type in the region. The flora is extremely diverse and includes, in addition to the eponymous firs and cedars, various oak species, juniper, and numerous endemic wildflowers. The wildlife of the reserve is home to rare species such as the Syrian brown bear, wolves, wild boars, and a rich birdlife, including various birds of prey. The area is characterized by a humid Mediterranean climate with high rainfall and snowfall in winter. It is an important center for the conservation of the genetic diversity of conifers and a destination for ecotourism and scientific research. The dense forests offer a strong contrast to the drier plains in the interior and are of crucial importance for the water balance of the coastal region.
