Mount Casius (Syria)

Weather…

Jabal al-Aqra, known in antiquity as Mount Casius, is a prominent mountain located on the border between Syria and Turkey on the Mediterranean coast. Reaching an elevation of 1,709 meters, it is the highest peak in the Syrian coastal region, dominating the landscape near Lattakia. Geologically, the mountain is composed primarily of limestone and marl, with its slopes dropping steeply into the sea. Jabal al-Aqra held immense religious significance in antiquity; it was revered by the Canaanites as the residence of the god Baal Zaphon and was later considered by the Greeks and Romans as the seat of Zeus Kasios. Annual pilgrimages and sacrificial rituals took place on its summit, from which Cyprus can be seen on clear days. The vegetation is shaped by the exposed location and maritime moisture, with dense pine forests covering its flanks. Today, the mountain is of military importance due to its border location, yet it remains a fascinating site for history enthusiasts and nature lovers who appreciate its blend of mythology and geography.
