💡 Tips
- Take advantage of the duty-free status! Fuel, cosmetics, spirits, and tobacco are significantly cheaper. However, be sure to check Swiss and EU customs allowances to avoid nasty surprises upon departure.
- The Silvretta Arena connects Samnaun with Ischgl in Austria. You can literally ski from one country to the other. Check the opening times for the connecting lifts, especially in the late afternoon.
- The journey to Samnaun is via a winding mountain road. In winter, winter tires are essential, and it's advisable to carry snow chains in your car.
- The tap water is of excellent quality, coming directly from the mountains. It's safer and better than bottled mineral water.
- Take the double-decker cable car, the first of its kind in the world, up to the Alptrider Sattel for a fantastic panoramic view of the surrounding peaks.

Samnaun holds a unique status as Switzerland's only duty-free zone, tucked away in a remote valley near the Austrian border. This makes it a popular destination for shopping, with over 50 duty-free boutiques lining the village streets. Beyond retail, Samnaun is a gateway to the Silvretta Arena, a massive cross-border ski area shared with Ischgl (Austria), offering nearly 240 km of high-altitude slopes. A must-see is the world's first double-decker cable car, a marvel of engineering. In summer, the area is a haven for hikers with over 250 km of marked trails through bustling alpine meadows. The local culture is a fascinating blend of Swiss traditions and Tyrolean influences, visible in both the architecture and the hearty mountain cuisine.
