💡 Tips

  • The weather in the Urseren Valley can change rapidly. Always carry wind and rain protection, even if you are just hiking near the village.
  • If driving the nearby mountain passes (Furka, Susten, Gotthard), check local road conditions in advance, as they often close due to snow until late spring.
  • The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn features a very scenic ride; sit on the right side when traveling towards Disentis for the best valley views.
  • The old town core around the Gotthardstrasse is pedestrian-friendly; explore the narrow alleys on foot rather than driving through.
  • Stop by the Schöllenen Gorge to see the legendary Devil's Bridge (Teufelsbrücke), which is easily accessible via a short walking path from the station.

Andermatt is a mountain village in the canton of Uri, lying at an elevation of 1,447 m in the Swiss Alps. Historically a vital stop on the mule track over the Gotthard Pass, it gained prominence with the construction of the Gotthard railway in 1882. After decades as a military garrison town, it underwent a major transformation with the 'Andermatt Swiss Alps' resort project, launched in 2005. This initiative, helmed by Egyptian investor Samih Sawiris, introduced luxury hotels, a golf course, and upscale residences. The village now attracts affluent tourists seeking skiing in winter and hiking in summer. The nearby Furka, Oberalp, and Gotthard passes offer spectacular drives. Andermatt's population is around 1,300, and its architecture includes the baroque church of St. Peter and Paul and the historic Tell Chapel.
