Carnival is the biggest annual event in Brig-Glis, held before Lent (February/March). Parades, Guggenmusik bands and masks fill the old town around Stockalper Square.
Brig-Glis is located in the Upper Valais at the foot of the Simplon Pass and is regarded as the historic gateway to the south. The city experienced its heyday in the 17th century under the merchant Kaspar Stockalper, who monopolized the salt trade across the Alps and commissioned the magnificent Stockalper Palace. This structure, with its distinctive onion domes, is today the largest private Baroque building in Switzerland. Geographically, Brig sits at the intersection of major Alpine transit routes and profited massively from the construction of the Simplon Tunnel in 1906, which was the longest railway tunnel in the world at the time. The old town preserves numerous patrician houses and sacred buildings reflecting the former wealth of the trading city. Today, Brig is a significant educational hub with the Swiss Distance University and a major railway junction where the SBB and Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn lines converge. Proximity to large ski areas and thermal baths like Brigerbad makes the city an attractive starting point for Alpine tourism.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
