Tranås is located in northern Jönköping County on the shores of Lake Sommen and is historically synonymous with the fur industry. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the town established itself as Sweden's primary center for pelt processing, earning the moniker of the fur town. A distinctive feature of the urban layout is Storgatan, an exceptionally wide main street designed in the 19th century as a firebreak to prevent the spread of large-scale conflagrations. Tranås officially became a city in 1919 and subsequently grew into a significant manufacturing hub for the furniture industry. The surrounding landscape is dominated by Lake Sommen, famous for its nearly 300 islands and exceptional water clarity. The area provides extensive opportunities for angling and recreational boating. The townscape is noted for its well-preserved wooden architecture and expansive green spaces. Today, Tranås serves as a regional service center with a broad industrial foundation.
